Disney’s first VR short ‘Cycles’ at b’Ars 2018!

 

 

 

 

Walt Disney Animation Studios will be bringing its VR short film Cycles to b’Ars 2018!

 

The short film is directed by Disney Animation lighting artist Jeff Gipson, marking his VR directorial debut and it was premiered at the SIGGRAPH 2018 conference in Vancouver last August.

Cycles will be hosted in the b’Ars VR Area, a new space in the Exhibition Area dedicated to VR and augmented reality. You will have the opportunity to experience it!!

And also we’ll be able to enjoy a conference by part of the team of the short who will explain how it was created, the technology used and some more tips.

JEFF GIPSON (director), LAUREN BROWN (production), JORGE E. RUIZ CANO (animation lead) and JOSE LUIS GOMEZ DIAZ (virtual reality technology lead) will guide us through this journey!

JEFF GIPSON (director) is a lighting artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios. In addition to directing the Studios’ first-ever VR short, “Cycles,” Gipson’s feature film credits include the Academy Award®-winning “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6,” and “Zootopia,” in addition to “Moana,” the short film “Inner Workings,” and the holiday featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.” After earning a B.EnvD from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2008, Gipson worked as a designer and project manager at SITE Design Group, Inc., designing over 80 concrete skateparks around the world. In 2011, Gipson switched career paths and began working in animation – his work experience includes Pixar Animation Studios and Laika/house. Gipson is currently serving as a lighting artist for Disney Animation’s upcoming feature film, “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”

 

LAUREN BROWN (production) is a production coordinator at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Brown graduated from San Jose State University in 2013 with a BFA in animation/illustration, and worked as a production assistant at Cartoon Network. Since joining the team at Disney Animation, Brown has worked on the Academy Award®-winning features “Big Hero 6” and “Zootopia,” in addition to “Moana,” the short film “Frozen Fever,” and the holiday featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.” Lauren Brown is currently at work in production management for the upcoming sequel to “Frozen.”

 

JORGE E. RUIZ CANO (animation lead) is an animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios, whose credits include the studio’s first-ever VR short, “Cycles,” the Academy Award®-winning features “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6,” and “Zootopia,” in addition to “Moana,” the short films “Feast,” “Frozen Fever,” and “Inner Workings,” and the holiday featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.” Ruiz Cano has been a part of the faculty at the California Institute of the Arts for the last five years, teaching animation and storytelling. Prior to joining WDAS, Ruiz Cano worked at Industrial Light & Magic, Blue Sky Studios, Electronic Arts, TellTale, Activision, and Pixar Animation Studios. Ruiz Cano, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, was raised in Maracay, the heart of the Caribbean. He is currently serving as an animator on Disney Animation’s upcoming feature film, “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”

 

JOSE LUIS GOMEZ DIAZ (virtual reality technology lead) joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2013 and has served as a Senior Software Engineer for the Academy Award®-winning features “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6,” and “Zootopia,” in addition to WDAS’ 2016 feature “Moana.” Prior to joining Disney, Gomez was developing visual effects software for Digital Domain and Framestore where he contributed his talents to the features “Gravity,” “Ender’s Game,” and others. Before that, he worked in animation at Ilion Animation Studios and Bren Entertainment. Gomez studied Computer Engineering at the University of Salamanca (Spain) and he graduated with honors in a MSc in Computer Graphics at the University of Teesside (U.K.) in 2001
